4 Common Types of Depression

4 Common Types of Depression

Depression is a well-known condition, yet many are unaware of its various manifestations. Here, we delve into four prevalent types:

Major Depressive Disorder

To receive a diagnosis of major depressive disorder, individuals must exhibit at least five symptoms of depression consistently for two consecutive weeks, with one symptom being either a depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure—a condition known as a “major depressive episode.” Recurrence of such episodes is common among those with this disorder.

Persistent Depressive Disorder

Also known as “dysthymia,” persistent depressive disorder entails experiencing a prolonged period of low-level depressed mood. Compared to major depressive disorder, symptoms of persistent depressive disorder tend to be less severe.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

SAD is linked to seasonal changes, primarily affecting individuals during fall and winter, although it can occur in spring and summer as well.

Postpartum Depression

Postpartum depression can induce feelings of sadness, indifference, anxiety, and exhaustion in women following childbirth. Unlike the transient “baby blues” lasting a few weeks, postpartum depression can persist for months or even years.
